Caption on back of card: Like many forts and towns in the new country, Fort Massac began as a French trading post in 1701. The British took over the fort in 1765 but eventually left it unmanned. Chickasaw Indians passing through the area burned it down. There was no resistance July 4, 1778 when George Rogers Clark claimed the Illinois Country for Virginia.
