A newspaper photograph and article from around 1932 report that Miss Marjorie and Miss Hays Brown of Towanda, sisters, were among the hundreds of persons who narrowly escaped death in the sinking of the Ohio river steamer City of Memphis near Louisville, Ky., August 18th. Both girls could swim, hence after the first shock they awaited developments and when the boat was beached they calmly waded ashore knee deep in mud and water.
