Sverre O. Braathen was born in Northwood, North Dakota in 1895. At the age of 22 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was sent to Great Lakes, Illinois for training. He then transferred to the naval shipyard at Norfolk, Virginia and was assigned to the USS Kearsarge.
