Born in Chicago in 1940, Paul Kaufman was a retired commercial airline pilot who was also active in the United States Air Force Reserve during the Vietnam War. In 1983, after years of working these parallel careers, he retired from flying and worked for Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) during the Reagan administration.
