- Description
The pagoda at the Nikko shrine stands between the Iemitsu and Ieyasu mausoleums. Built in the 17th century, it stands five stories high (105 feet). It is constructed in a unique fashion with the central pole swinging freely as a sort of gyroscope. The pathway to the right leads to the Nio-mon where tickets and permits for tourists can be purchased. The large torii (traditional Japanese gate) occupies the center of the photo.
