A senior at Indiana University, Sautter was heavily involved in anti-Vietnam War demonstrations and traveled to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, because of his involvement with Students for a Democratic Society (SDS). He drove into Chicago from South Bend, Indiana on the third day and encountered National Guard blockades.
