This photo was likely taken prior to 1873, when the third and final fire in the Hon-Maru (principle palace) caused the emperor to relocate the imperial residency, prior to rebuilding and renovating Tokyo Castle. The photo is of the inner moat and gate (Sakashitamon) on the southern side of the castle, built in the beginning of the seventeenth century by the Tokugawa Shogun Ieyasu.
