First published soon after Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party overthrew the Weimar Republic in 1933, American Illustrated News was a state-sponsored German publication "designed to be circulated abroad in German interests," according to an April 19, 1934 article in the New York Times titled "Says German Organ Aim to Spur Travel, Bergmann, Editor, Asserts the American Illustrated News Is Not for Propaganda."
