Alan Schriesheim was born in 1930 in New York City. After finishing his Ph.D. in chemistry, Schriesheim took a job with the National Bureau of Standards in 1954. In 1956, Schriesheim began working for Exxon in New Jersey, where his career advanced through the ranks of their corporate research division. In 1982, he was offered the directorship of Argonne National Laboratory, becoming their first CEO with a background in private industry.
