This written history compiled, edited and written by Dale M. Sutter of Towanda. In 1847 and 1851 acts were passed by Congress granting construction of a railroad from Alton Illinois to Chicago. The completion of the railway in 1854 made Towanda accessible and the population began to quickly increase. It brought sturdy families from Ohio.
