Joseph E. Kennicott was born in Broadalbin, New York, the son of Jonathan and Jane Kennicott. The family settled near the village of Half Day in Lake County, Illinois, in 1835. His father had a lumber business at “The Mill.” Joseph E. Kennicott met Mary Nason at a revival meeting in Wheeling. They married on August 2, 1841, which was her 20th birthday.
