Arlene Mulder grew up in Tulare, California, and received her B.A. from San Francisco State University in physical education and biology. She met her husband, Al, at college and they settled in Arlington Heights in 1970. She taught at Niles West High School and, in 1971, became a coach for the new Title IX programs.
