John E. Gavit, - Born Oct 29, 1817 in N. Y. City. Died, Stockbridge, Mass. Aug. 25. 1874. He founded in 1841-42 what is now Gavit & Co., of Albany, N. Y. – Removed to New York in 1859, was founder of the American Bank Note Co., of which he was President 1865-1874. Most of the plates of the firm of Gavit & Co. were the work, probably, of Robert K. Quayle.
