Samuel Brush was the nephew of Daniel Brush, who is considered the founder of Carbondale. Samuel was a mine owner of the St. Louis and Big Muddy Coal Company, which led to many strikes and fights between the miners and the African-American strikebreakers who were brought in to work the mines.
