Red Top Farm, as it was popularly known for its red building roofs, was owned by John R. Thompson. Mr. Thompson headed one of the largest restaurant chains of the early 20th century, providing hot lunchroom-style food to workers. He bought the Libertyville farm property from Simon Stratton around 1901, but Thompson was responsible for constructing most of the buildings on the property.
