Enoshima is a small island in Sagami Bay, directly below Tokyo bay. The entire island was dedicated to the goddess Benzaiten (Benten) until the Meiji government repossessed it and sold it to investors in 1880. Samuel Cocking, a British businessman, bought much the island and built a large greenhouse and botanical gardens, which today is open to the public and known as the Samuel Cocking Garden.
